A Chrysler PT Cruiser, powered by an electric drive system provided by British Columbia’s Ballard Power Systems, will be the first and will run under the Yellow Cab banner.
Approval was by unanimous vote and was the result of a long process that utilized a TLC charter article which allows the introduction of advanced or experimental innovations in taxicabs. Hybrid Technologies selected a PT Cruiser after several meetings with the TLC.
The taxi will hit the streets within the next two months; it is anticipated that it will also be used to highlight Yellow Cabs’ 100th anniversary in New York City, which commences in 2007.
