North Vancouver, British Columbia – B.C. students from Vancouver, Burnaby and Summerland have won the top prizes for their driving safety ads.
The high school students were competitors in the annual Your Ad Here contest, sponsored by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). The students won Apple equipment prizes, while Langley Fundamental middle and secondary school won graphic design software for having the highest percentage of student participation in the contest.
ICBC asked students to design ads that would encourage their peers to make smart driving decisions. Car crashes remain the number-one preventable killer of young people in the province, with an average of over 49 killed and 7,600 injured each year.
“The Your Ad Here contest is one way we reach out to high school students to help them get engaged in road safety,” said Fiona Temple, ICBC director of road safety. “The contest encourages students to talk to their peers about making smart choices as both passengers and drivers.”
More than 190 students in grades 8 to 12 entered the contest this year, 35 per cent more than last year. ICBC will feature the winners in some 160,000 high school agendas in September, and in posters and ads for the next contest.
The winning ads can be seen at ICBC.
