Automakers announce ongoing hurricane relief efforts
Detroit, Michigan – General Motors has announced that GM and GMAC employee donations to support relief efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita now exceed US$1.4 million, bringing the company’s donation to the American Red Cross to US$3.5 million to date. The company will fully match employee contributions through October 15. The company has also made available an additional 50 vehicles to the American Red Cross and other agencies, bringing the total to 250, plus twelve Hummer H3 vehicles made available to the Louisiana governor’s office for six months or more, to use in transporting relief workers and supplies. The H3 is built in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Volkswagen of America has announced that its foundation will make an immediate cash donation of US$500,000 to the Red Cross relief fund, and has also pledged up to an additional US$250,000 in matching funds from a dealer gift program, and up to an additional US$50,000 from an employee program. The company is also offering to lend several Touareg SUVs to the Red Cross for local relief efforts.
