Audi A8 to offer ceramic brakes
Ingolstadt, Germany – Audi has announced that its 12-cylinder A8 will be available in future with optional ceramic brakes. As well as quadrupling brake service life as compared to conventional steel discs, the new lightweight brakes offer outstanding braking power and supreme resistance to fading.
The discs are made from reinforced ceramic, a composite structure composed of silicon carbide embedded with high-strength carbon fibres. Ceramic brake discs cannot rust and their distinctive perforation patterns and red brake calipers add styling touches. In addition, the brakes weigh about five kilograms, about 50 per cent lighter than conventional brakes, and have a service life of up to 300,000 km under standard operating conditions.
The new ceramic brakes will be available as an option for the A8 W12 and A8 L W12 Quattro models starting in July.
