Art of the Automobile Competition issues call for entries

Toronto, Ontario – The ninth annual Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) Art of the Automobile Competition is calling all Canadian automotive artists to submit slides of their work by the deadline of Friday, November 19th, 2004. Finalists will be announced mid-December.

The work of the competition finalists will be used to create a Canada-wide exhibit that will travel to the Montreal auto show in January, followed by the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto in February, then the Calgary and Vancouver auto shows in March and early April.

The art entries are adjudicated by an impressive panel of award winning judges who are already quite successful in the United States and Europe. Judges Ken Dallison, Jay Koka, Susan Pepler and Jonathan Milne have all been recipients of the top prizes at the world-renowned Pebble Beach and Meadow Brook Hall Concours d’Elegance.

The competition’s mandate is to give professional artists more exposure right here in the their own country and, at the same time, ensure that lesser-known Canadian automotive artists have an opportunity to exhibit their talents. Several past competition winners have sold their exhibited art work at the auto shows, and gained commissions for new work, as a result of their successes in the AJAC competition.

All media, with the exception of photography, are accepted in the competition. There are eight potential prize categories as follows: First Place ($1,000.00), Second Place ($ 750.00), Third Place ($ 500.00), Award of Merit ($ 250.00), Large Sculpture ($1,000 – awarded only if applicable), Small Sculpture ($500 – awarded only if applicable), Computer Graphics ($250) and Youth ($250).

The competition is supported by corporate sponsors, in particular General Motors of Canada and Mercedes-Benz as well as Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki and Volkswagen.

Overall winners in the competition will be announced mid- February 2005 during the Press Preview Days at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Ontario.

Entry forms can be obtained from the AJAC web site at www.ajac.ca.
Photos of the winning art work from previous years are located on AJAC’s web site and can be downloaded for editorial purposes in both high and low resolution.
