AMA-sponsored program speaks to youth about impaired driving

Fort McMurray, Alberta – The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) is sponsoring a driving program called Stop Alcohol From Traumatizing Youth (SAFTY) that is unique to Fort McMurray. The program is a collaborative partnership that includes EMS, the RCMP, the fire department and other health officials in conjunction with Students Against Drunk Driving.

The presentation involves crash scene reenactments, including extricating victims, hospital scenes and emotional first-hand testimonials from victims and emergency personnel. The presentations are specifically targeted at young people and focuses on the risks and consequences of impaired driving. The AMA says that almost 25 per cent of fatally injured drivers in Alberta used alcohol prior to the crash that took their lives.
