General Motors fields a quarter of the competitors, three in each category

The North American Car of the Year jury has announced its short list for Car of the Year and Truck/Utility of the Year.

After culling the long list, the jury has picked 12 vehicles for each category.

Of note, General Motors has three contenders in each category, with the new CTS, Corvette Stingray, and Impala in the car category and Encore, Silverado, and Sierra in the truck/utility category. Also, Mazda’s two newest offerings – the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 – both make it into the car category.

Breaking down the short list, seven are domestic, three are German, nine are Japanese marques, two are British, and three are Korean.

Winners will be announced at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
