The category winners of the 2011 Canadian Car of the Year awards have been named, following a week of testing by members of AJAC, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. From these category winners, the 2011 Canadian Car of the Year and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year winners will be announced next February.

The contest, sponsored by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), is calling on artistic youth to turn on their cameras or pull out their sketchpads to create safe driving messages.

Alternative vehicle sales may be over-hyped: J.D. Power

Hybrid and battery electric vehicles face challenges in all markets and their anticipated sales may be over-hyped, according to a new report by J.D. Power and Associates. Combined global sales of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are expected to total 5.2 million units in 2020, just 7.3 per cent of the 70.9 million passenger vehicles forecast to be sold worldwide that year.

More used-car buyers using the Internet: J.D. Power

More Americans are using the Internet to buy used cars, according to a new study released by J.D. Power and Associates. After remaining stable during the past four years, the percentage of used-car buyers who use the Internet in the shopping process increased to 68 per cent in 2010, a five per cent increase from 2009.

Toyota launches “battery-to-battery” recycling

Toyota has launched a new program to recycle the nickel in used nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries from hybrid vehicles to use in new NiMH batteries. The company said that the program, which will be launched in Japan in cooperation with partners, is the first of its kind worldwide.
